So the other day I was told to watch this popular TV show that is currently one of the most-watched TV serials in the country. I have to say that if anyone gives me unsolicited advice from now on in real life the background music of this show will play in my head. Anupama focuses on being a dedicated homemaker who always considers her family as her first priority and is mistreated by her own children and mother-in-law because she is uneducated and not as cool as kids would want, except for Samar her son who is the only one who constantly defends her. Anupama is considered a revolutionary show because it deals with the case of infidelity in a manner that has never been done before. For a woman to take the decision to actually file for divorce to get separated from a toxic marriage.

Anupama will constantly remind you “Aatmasamman” that she leaves her husband to live an independent life. According to her, family comes first, so she moves into the same house where her ex-husband is living with his current wife because her inlaws are her priority even though the character ‘baa” almost makes her life hell every day. Then there is “baapuji” who is Anupama’s father-in-law but treats her like his own daughter. Rakhi Dawe who plays Anupama’s samdhan ji has to be the only vamp of the series who does justice to the character pretty well having the most unintentionally funny dialogues.

Anupama is a woman who is a great dancer and a great cook who puts everyone other than herself first. The frustration that most people feel for the episodes till now is that she gives everyone around her either a lecture or advice but somehow never applies the same to her own life. She worships a man who disrespects her, calls her unpadh, gawaar constantly, is embarrassed by her very presence, then she tells people that the most important thing in life is self-respect and after all this being the caretaker of everyone’s well-being almost always at the cost of her own mental health.

If I took a shot every time her character says, sorry oh I mean “sory” for something that was not even her fault. Vanraj Shah her husband is an embodiment of a pathological liar and an insecure sociopath who cannot stand anyone else’s happiness. He disrespects her appearance and tells her to do something because she looked old, after 25 years of being married still doesn’t remember her birthday, discourages her from taking up a new job, and oh I forgot to mention that he cheated on her for years with his office colleague. The man is so insecure that even after divorce he probits his wife hanging out with someone else, Oh I mean ex-wife. The children Paritosh and Paakhi constantly remind Anupama what an embarrassment she is. The show has a message that women should take a stand against the abuse that they are enduring.

The table turned a little after the introduction of a rich businessman Anuj Kapadia, an ex-college batchmate Anupama does not remember, he is in love with her and helps her in various business enterprises. People are loving their dynamic, and the respectful nature which they create, and it shows how beautiful a relationship can be if it has a foundation of love and respect for one another.

Overall I really liked this show as it deals with women’s empowerment and inspires women out there in terms of better late than never, raising your voice against any kind of abuse, do not listen to people when they say “adjust to karna hi padta hai”  with some amazingly entertaining characters and dialogues including the legendary “sory and “thanku” by Anupama.
