We all have that hidden artist in us. Some of us might have even aspired to become actors as we grow up (or maybe you are already a successful one!). But there’s this myth that the profession of ‘acting’ comes with an expiry date. As you age, your scope of getting significant and meaningful roles in the entertainment industry reduces by a larger proportion.

But is that actually true? No it isn’t! Meet Devi Verma who actually made her acting debut at the age of 85 years! Yes, we aren’t kidding. The biggest irony of it all, she wasn't really keen on acting and had actually never watched a film since 15 years when she was approached for a role in ‘Saudi Vellaka’, a Malayalam Film. “I did not think much of my performance when I watched the film on the screen for the first time, when they took it to Goa (for the International Film Festival of India). But I was happy to hear from others that I did well,” Devi said.
Saudi Vellaka is a beautiful story of the character Aisha’s journey through the years. The delicate portrayal of the many layers of the character by Devi Verma would make you think that she is a true veteran actress with years of experience in her portfolio and not actually a debutant.

Tharun Moorth saw her pic on her grandson's phone and was keen on casting her for his movie. When filmmaker Tharun Moorthy came to her with this idea, she wasn’t averse but expressed concerns over her health which she was assured can be taken care of.
Was she tense about her role? ‘“I had no tension, no difficulties because I had to think of nothing. I knew nothing about cinema, so I was not nervous. They tell me what to do, and I do it,” Devi Verma spoke confidently!

She has already received recognition for her work and a few awards for her brilliant performance too. A special jury mention from the Prem Nazir Suhurth Samithi Thiruvananthapuram and Kalabhavan Mani was also dedicated to her.
Now if this is not destiny, we don’t know what is! Devi Verma has proven that age cannot stop one from achieving laurels. Surely she is an inspiration to everyone and inspires us all to explore our best potential.
