Exposure to UV rays is a major concern for our skin and overall health. Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to a range of health issues including sunburn, premature ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer. In order to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of UV rays, it is important to take some precautions. By wearing protective clothing, applying sunscreen, seeking shade, staying hydrated, and being mindful of reflections we can reduce our risk of skin damage and other health issues associated with UV radiation. It’s important to remember that these precautions should be taken not just during the summer months, but year-round, as UV rays can still pose a risk even on cloudy days and the winter season. So be sure to take care of your skin and protect yourself from the harmful effects of UV radiation In this blog, we will discuss some of the ways in which we can protect ourselves from UV rays.
Wear protective and full clothing:
One of the most effective ways to protect ourselves from UV rays is to wear protective clothing. This includes long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses. When choosing to clothe, opt for fabrics that provide better protection from the sun, such as dark colours, and dry materials. Additionally, wearing a hat can provide shade for your face, neck, and ears. Lastly, investing in good sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection can help prevent eye damage from UV rays.
Make sunscreen your best friend:
Applying sunscreen is another important step in protecting ourselves from UV rays. Sunscreen works by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering UV rays before they reach the skin. When choosing a sunscreen, look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and has an SPF of at least 30. Be sure to apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
Limit sun exposure:
Seeking shade is another effective way to protect ourselves from UV rays. Especially during peak hours of 10 am-4 pm when the sun is strongest. This can be done by staying indoors, sitting under a tree or awning, or using a beach umbrella when outside. Limiting the amount of direct sunlight we are exposed to can reduce our risk of skin damage and other health issues associated with UV radiation.
Stay Hydrated:
Staying hydrated is important when protecting ourselves from UV rays. When we are dehydrated, our skin is more susceptible to damage from UV radiation. Therefore, it is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when spending time outdoors. Additionally, eating fruits and vegetables with high water content can also help keep us hydrated.
Be careful of reflections:
UV rays can reflect off of surfaces such as water, sand, and snow, increasing our exposure to UV radiation. When spending time near reflective surfaces, be sure to take extra precautions by wearing protective clothing, applying sunscreen, and seeking shade. It’s also worth noting that UV rays can pass through windows, so protecting yourself from UV rays when indoors is also important.
Wear sunglasses and a hat :
Protect your eyes from UV rays by wearing sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UVA and UVB rays. Look for sunglasses with wraparound styles that can provide additional protection. A wide-brimmed hat can protect your face, neck, and ears from the sun's harmful rays. Look for a hat with a brim that is at least three inches wide.
Check the UV index before stepping out:
The UV index is a measure of the strength of UV radiation. Check the UV index before heading outside and adjust your precautions accordingly. If the UV index is high, take extra precautions to protect yourself from the sun.
